Authorities in Uganda have arrested more than 200 foreigners in a recent operation aimed at stopping illegal migration and possible criminal activity. The arrests took place in the north of the country and in the capital, Kampala.
Officials say many of those detained had no identification documents no passports or IDs and were living in tightly controlled conditions. Some were found in a compound where people were not allowed to freely enter or leave. Despite having facilities like a restaurant and entertainment areas, their movement was heavily restricted.
According to immigration spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi, the group may have been brought into the country under false promises of jobs. Once in Uganda, their documents were allegedly taken, and they were gathered into isolated groups.
The government suspects links to human trafficking and cyber scam operations. Investigations are ongoing to find those responsible, especially the individuals believed to be holding the group’s passports and controlling their stay.
Officials say the people being held fall into different categories: some may be victims of trafficking, others could be involved in illegal activities, while some may have simply overstayed their visas.
