A fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford has left over 600 crew members without beds while the ship operates in the Middle East amid the conflict involving Iran.

According to reports, the fire started in the ship’s laundry area and took more than 30 hours to fully extinguish. While the blaze was not combat-related, it caused significant disruption onboard. Two sailors suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and others experienced smoke inhalation. (Reuters)

With parts of the ship damaged, many sailors are now sleeping on floors and tables, and laundry services remain unavailable. The situation adds to the strain on the carrier’s crew of about 4,500 personnel, who are already on a long and demanding deployment.

Despite the incident, U.S. military officials said the ship remains fully operational, with no damage to its propulsion system, and continues conducting flight operations. (wsj.com)

The carrier has been at sea for months, moving from the Atlantic to the Caribbean and now the Middle East, and could soon break the record for the longest U.S. carrier deployment in modern times. Ongoing issues, including plumbing failures affecting hundreds of toilets, have also raised concerns about conditions onboard during the extended mission. (The Washington Post)

Experts say such long deployments can wear down both equipment and crew, highlighting the challenges of maintaining high-intensity military operations over extended periods.
