Madagascar’s President Michael Randrianirina has appointed anti-corruption chief Mamitiana Rajaonarison as the country’s new prime minister, days after dismissing the previous premier and the entire cabinet.
Randrianirina, who took power in October and pledged sweeping reforms, said the new prime minister would lead the government “on a clean path” and help restore public confidence in state institutions.
In an address broadcast on state television, the president highlighted Rajaonarison’s reputation for integrity.
“That integrity you have is what I expect from you as prime minister. Show that the country needs people of integrity – people who cannot be swayed and who cannot be bought,” he said.
The president did not provide an official explanation for the sudden dismissal of former Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and the entire cabinet earlier in the week.
Since taking office, Randrianirina has promoted a political programme he calls “Refoundation,” aimed at restructuring state institutions after a political transition that removed the previous administration.
The initiative focuses on strengthening government authority, combating corruption and rebuilding public trust in national leadership.
