Kenya is facing mounting concerns over fuel shortages as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East disrupts global energy supply chains and drives up oil prices.

According to the Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya, nearly 20% of fuel stations are already experiencing supply constraints after authorities froze pump prices despite rising international costs. Industry representatives warn that the situation could rapidly deteriorate into a full-scale shortage if tensions persist.

The crisis is largely linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Kenya, which relies heavily on imports from the Middle East through government-to-government agreements, remains particularly vulnerable to such shocks.

Fuel retailers are also expected to begin stockpiling petroleum products in anticipation of future price increases, a move that could further tighten supply in the short term. Industry leaders have urged the government to allow alternative sourcing from private suppliers to mitigate the impact.

While regulators maintain that current fuel reserves are sufficient, growing concerns over panic buying and hoarding suggest that pressure on the system is increasing.

The unfolding situation highlights the broader exposure of African economies to global energy disruptions and the potential ripple effects on domestic markets.
