Mali’s customs officials have thwarted a major smuggling attempt at Bamako airport.
Approximately €1,270,000 (about 900 million FCFA) in cash was found hidden in the luggage of a Malian citizen.
Smuggling Plan Uncovered
The smugglers had devised a complex plan to bypass customs controls. However, the attempt was thwarted following an extensive investigation by the Intelligence and Customs Investigations Department.
The cash was concealed in two carefully prepared packages. The suspect attempted to evade checks with the help of an accomplice who had an airport access badge. However, the plan failed due to the vigilance of customs officers.
Arrests of the Suspects
The suspect involved in the smuggling operation was quickly apprehended along with their accomplice. The accomplice, who attempted to flee, was stopped by the swift intervention of security forces.
