At least a dozen soldiers were killed in an attack on the northern town of Titao in Burkina Faso over the weekend. The assault was claimed by a group linked to Al-Qaeda, according to security and local sources.
The soldiers were reportedly digging protective trenches around the town when they were attacked. Security officials described the damage as “significant,” and residents said they heard gunfire for several days. The attackers said as many as 30 soldiers were killed, though official sources confirmed more than a dozen deaths.
Titao has been repeatedly targeted in recent months, as northern Burkina Faso remains one of the hardest-hit areas in the region’s ongoing insurgency. Civilians were also killed in a separate attack in mid-February.
Burkina Faso continues to struggle with violence from extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda, contributing to a wider security crisis across the Sahel region.
