Lee Jae Myung has expressed regret to North Korea over drone flights carried out by individuals, saying they caused unnecessary military tensions.
Speaking after several suspects were charged for flying drones across the border, Lee made it clear that the actions were not authorized by the government. Still, he acknowledged the impact, calling the incidents “reckless” and “unacceptable.”
This is the first time Lee has directly expressed regret to North Korea, marking a notable step in his effort to reduce tensions and reopen dialogue since taking office in 2025.
He also highlighted the anxiety caused to residents living near the border, where such incidents can quickly escalate into military confrontations.
Despite these efforts, relations remain strained. North Korea has recently labeled South Korea its “most hostile state” and has shown little interest in restarting talks.
In simple terms, South Korea is trying to calm the situation and reopen communication, but trust between the two sides remains very low.
