Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called on West African leaders to strengthen their commitment to democracy and national unity, drawing inspiration from the peaceful election results in Ghana.

Speaking at the opening of the 66th Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, Tinubu congratulated Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for the successful presidential and parliamentary elections, which have set a positive example for the region.

Tinubu noted that democratic progress in West Africa had taken a significant step forward, stating, “I call on each of us in the region to learn from this exemplary democratic practice and to prioritize national unity in our efforts to ensure political stability in the region.” He also expressed his hope that this peaceful transition model would serve as the foundation for a culture of democracy not only in West Africa but across the entire African continent.

In Ghana’s December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) leading candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, demonstrated respect for democracy by congratulating his rival, John Dramani Mahama, before the official election results were announced. This gesture was seen as a symbol of democratic maturity in West Africa.

Tinubu also praised President Akufo-Addo’s exceptional leadership during his two-year tenure and his commitment to ECOWAS, describing him as a true Pan-Africanist.
