Cameroonian authorities have confirmed that opposition figure Anicet Ekane died from natural causes while in detention, days after his arrest during heightened political tensions.
Ekane was detained alongside other opposition leaders who supported Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s contested claim of victory in the October 2025 presidential election. The official results returned President Paul Biya to power for another seven-year term.
A defence ministry statement said forensic examinations showed no signs of trauma and concluded that underlying health complications led to Ekane’s death. His remains were returned to his family on Monday, according to state television.
The incident follows protests sparked by Bakary’s self-declaration as election winner — demonstrations that were later dispersed by security forces.
