Assane-Seck University in Ziguinchor has closed its doors following violent protests by students demanding better education and living conditions.

Located in Casamance, Assane-Seck University has been closed until further notice following violent clashes sparked by a series of student demands concerning education and living conditions on campus. Academic authorities have also decided to dissolve student organizations, signaling a radical shift in crisis management.

Were legitimate demands ignored?
Students have denounced a critical lack of classrooms, housing, and essential resources. Key concerns include the deplorable state of buildings, frequent power outages, and the halt of modernization projects—issues that jeopardize their education and daily lives, fueling widespread frustration.

The Academic Council not only suspended educational activities but also ordered all residents to vacate their accommodations by the end of the week. Meanwhile, the Social University Services Center halted its services, including housing and meal provisions, leaving students in complete uncertainty about their basic needs.

Will an emergency plan suffice?
In response to the crisis, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has ordered an emergency plan to complete unfinished infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring continuity in education and social stability in public universities. However, many observers consider this response insufficient and too late to quell the anger of Ziguinchor’s students.

A region already under strain
The Casamance region, which also serves as the stronghold of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, faces unique challenges. This academic crisis risks exacerbating social and political tensions in an already fragile region. The involvement of local authorities will be critical to preventing further escalation.

Towards a resolution?
The closure of Assane-Seck University is a wake-up call about the state of higher education in Senegal. Student demands highlight structural issues that require lasting solutions. The government’s ability to effectively address these challenges will shape the university’s future and students’ trust in public institutions.
