China has strongly criticized a proposed move by the Federal Communications Commission in the United States that could restrict foreign telecom certification bodies.
The plan would remove approval for testing and certification organizations from countries that don’t have formal agreements with the US. It could also block certain companies especially those on a government “Covered List” from operating in the American telecom sector.
Chinese officials say the proposal is unfair and politically motivated, arguing that it targets foreign companies without solid evidence. A spokesperson from China’s commerce ministry warned that such measures could hurt not only Chinese firms, but also global supply chains, trade partners, and even US consumers.
Beijing is urging Washington to reverse the plan and has signaled it may respond with countermeasures if the rules go ahead.
The tension comes at a sensitive time, as both countries are also trying to stabilize economic relations. Senior officials, including China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng, recently held talks with US counterparts like Scott Bessent and Jamieson Greer to improve trade cooperation ahead of a planned visit by President Donald Trump to China.
In simple terms: the US says it’s protecting national security, while China sees it as unfair trade pressure adding another layer to the ongoing rivalry between the world’s two biggest economies.
