Thousands of high-end cars originally bound for Dubai have been diverted to Lamu highlighting how the Middle East conflict is reshaping global shipping routes
The vehicles shipped from Japan were unloaded after two vessels operated by Grimaldi Group were unable to continue to their original destination due to escalating tensions in the Gulf
The disruption follows the closure of key maritime routes including the Strait of Hormuz after the outbreak of war involving Iran as well as reported strikes affecting infrastructure near Jebel Ali Port
Images from Lamu show rows of luxury cars including Porsche models stored in warehouses while awaiting further developments
Port officials say more than 4,000 vehicles have already been offloaded with another shipment of around 5,000 expected soon
While authorities acknowledge the humanitarian impact of the conflict they also note that the situation is temporarily boosting activity at Lamu’s port which is part of a major regional transport corridor linking South Sudan and Ethiopia to the Kenyan coast
Officials say ships carrying goods for the Gulf are increasingly being forced to delay reroute or remain at sea as uncertainty persists
Kenyan authorities believe Lamu could benefit in the long term as it positions itself as a key deep water transshipment hub in Africa
