Recent snowfall across the eastern Black Sea region is being welcomed by agricultural experts and producers, who say the cold weather is playing a positive role in hazelnut cultivation.
Snowfall in mid- and high-altitude areas has contributed to the chilling process required for hazelnut trees, helping to prevent early budding and protecting crops from potential climate-related risks later in the season.
Eyyüp Ergan, Chairman of the Trabzon Commodity Exchange, said the snow is beneficial for hazelnuts as long as weather conditions remain within normal seasonal patterns.
“Our region is the heart of hazelnut production, and snowfall in the middle and higher elevations supports the natural cycle of the crop. If snowfall also reaches coastal areas under normal conditions, it can further improve soil moisture and plant health,” Ergan said.
He added that the chilling period is essential for hazelnut trees to enter healthy dormancy and prepare for the next growing season.
“Snowfall prevents branches from waking up too early. This reduces the risk of frost damage later on. If climate conditions remain favorable, 2026 could be a productive year for hazelnuts,” Ergan said, while warning against early speculation in agricultural markets based on weather forecasts.
