South African soldiers were deployed on the streets of Johannesburg on Wednesday as part of efforts to support police in tackling gang violence and illegal mining, two major security challenges facing the country.
Troops were seen in the suburb of Riverlea, marking the first major deployment since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced plans to use the army to assist law enforcement. In his annual address to the nation last month, Ramaphosa described organized crime as one of the biggest threats to South Africa’s democracy and economic development.
Authorities have not yet released full details about the scale or duration of the military operation.
South Africa continues to face a high crime rate, with around 60 murders recorded daily. Many of these incidents are linked to drug gang conflicts in Cape Town and violent clashes tied to illegal mining operations in Gauteng province, where Johannesburg is located.
The deployment is part of broader efforts by the government to restore security and stability in communities affected by organized criminal networks.
