The UN Women Representative in Niger, Rachelle Djangone-Mian, has been awarded the title of “Officer of the Order of Merit of Niger.”
The ceremony took place in the gardens of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presided over by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Alio Daouda.
Minister Alio Daouda praised the work of Rachelle Djangone-Mian, who, since taking office in March 2022, has collaborated closely with the Nigerien government in the areas of women’s economic empowerment and gender equality. The representative spearheaded several innovative initiatives to support women’s leadership, prevent conflicts, and contribute to peace processes.
Establishment of Saraounia Spaces: Four Saraounia spaces of cultural and historical significance were created to promote women’s participation in peacebuilding and decision-making processes.
Training of Women Mediators: 1,200 women mediators were trained, and 120 conflict prevention mechanisms were established.
Economic Empowerment Initiatives: The “Consume Nigerien” initiative encouraged purchases from local women producers. Additionally, in response to flood disasters, direct purchases from women entrepreneurs contributed to humanitarian relief efforts.
Rachelle Djangone-Mian expressed her gratitude to the Nigerien state and government, highlighting the historic role of women in leadership and resilience. “You are the Saraounias of modern times,” she said, commending Nigerien women for their efforts to build a more peaceful and prosperous future for their families and communities.
This Order of Merit distinction recognizes Rachelle Djangone-Mian’s contributions to women’s empowerment and her commitment to social transformation in Niger during her tenure.
