Uganda has expressed gratitude to Türkiye for facilitating the evacuation of its citizens from Iran by granting transit visas during the ongoing regional crisis.

According to Ugandan authorities, dozens of nationals—mostly students—were transported from Tehran to the Türkiye–Iran border before continuing their journey to Istanbul for onward flights to Kampala.

Ugandan military spokesperson Chris Magezi said the evacuation involved a 24-hour bus trip from Tehran to the Gurbulak border crossing, followed by another long journey to Istanbul.

The evacuation operation was coordinated by Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s military as tensions in the Middle East escalated following recent strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks.

Officials said the evacuees are expected to arrive safely in Kampala, while Uganda thanked the Turkish government for its cooperation in facilitating the transit process.
